The dust is also used to make plasters such as marmorino and venetian plaster as a filler in paint or in frescoes to replace sand. Alternatively you may find it easier to mix the paint and dust on a palette if you are working with a very small amount. Molding pastes are meant to be used sculpturally for creating heavy textures and three dimensional surfaces. The most common use for marble dust in painting is creating traditional rabbit skin glue gesso a surface primer for paintings.

Acrylic gesso very often has the addition of marble dust as an additive to make it slightly denser. Ther were two types of gesso used by the old masters gesso grosso and gesso sottille. Blend out fine veins. It is made from ph neutral basic calcium carbonate.

Repeat this step at least two times and add in some white veins to create highlighted areas. Molding pastes are extra thick opaque pastes made with actual marble dust and acrylic polymer emulsion.
